Frequently asked questions

Sweet Science is a specialty filter roast blend. It's sweet and smooth and designed to showcase the lighter side of coffee. It's roasted lighter than espresso blends, to highlight complex flavours. We think Sweet Science Filter Blend is the perfect everyday filter coffee. It's smooth, sweet, with notes of milk chocolate, and subtle fruit flavours.

The biggest difference between filter coffee and espresso coffee is the roast style. Filter coffee is roasted lighter, so you get more delicate flavours, and the natural acidity and sweetness of the beans. It's typically brewed with gentler methods like pour-over or batch-brew. Espresso on the other hand is roasted darker, and extracted under high pressure (like an espresso machine) which creates a more intense and rich taste.

You can, and some do add a dash of milk, but here at the roastery we prefer drinking Sweet Science without milk. It's not the best coffee if you're making milk based coffees like lattes or flat whites. For those, we recommend an espresso blend.

Sweet Science was made for filter brewing methods, like Pour-Over, Aeropress, Moccamaster or batch brew. The lighter roast lets subtle flavours shine, so these more gentle brewing methods work best.

Filter coffee is roasted lighter than espresso. Espresso is more concentrated, but filter coffee often actually contains more caffeine! Strength wise, filter coffees tend to taste lighter than espresso roasts, and are sweeter and more nuanced.
