PRICING EXPLAINED
*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.
^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
ABOUT
Planted with Catuaí and Bourbon varietals, Fazenda São Judas extends over 35 hectares. This incredibly special lot consists entirely of coffee originating from the Bourbon trees, which producers Antônio and Terezinha Rigno tend to with extraordinary care.
The farm, Fazenda São Judas Tadeu, lies outside the small town of Piatã in Bahia’s Chapada Diamantina region. Sitting at an elevation of 1300 to 1380 MASL, the name of the region (Chapada Diamantina) translates to “Diamond Plateau” in Portuguese - and it’s for good reason, too. For 100 years, the area was mined for the gemstones embedded in its cliffs. Today, the region is famous for its specialty coffee.
The farm is owned by Antônio Rigno and his wife Terezinha, who have been farming coffee in the region for more than 40 years. Antônio owns a number of farms in Piatã and is very well respected in the community. Many farmers in the area look to him for advice and mentorship, and he graciously lets them process their coffee at the couple’s wet mill located at São Judas Tadeu.
