Bolivia Carmalita Java

Bolivia Carmalita Java

An incredibly limited and highly sought after coffee, this Bolivian Java coffee from producer Carmela Aduviri, is truly one of a kind.

WHAT MAKES THIS COFFEE UNIQUE

This 100% Java microlot was produced by Carmela Aduviri in Copacabana, a small and remote settlement 180 kilometres from La Paz in the heart of the Caranavi province.

THE JAVA VARIETAL

Carmela has only recently begun producing Java — a rare variety with a long history of cultivation. Its name comes from the Indonesian island of the same name, where coffee was first introduced by the Dutch, directly from Ethiopia, in the early 19th century. It now thrives as an interesting alternative to the Gesha variety. Thanks to its incredibly distinct flavour profile, excellent cup quality, and high tolerance to disease, Java can be quite profitable to small coffee farmers.

WHO IS CARMELA ADUVIRI

Carmela moved to the region when she was 25, and has spent almost 50 years working in coffee - all while raising eight children. Her farm, Carmalita, is around three hectares in size and sits at 1500–1670 MASL. Because the region is so steep, the farm is laid out across five ‘floors’ and contains a number of corridors to make the picking and loading of the cherries easier. Carmela’s house sits on one of the only flat surfaces of the farm, a place that’s also home to a number of mandarin and lime trees which the family grows for food.

PRICING EXPLAINED

*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
