For this coffee, we paid 205% above the FairTrade price, because we are committed to an economically sustainable future for coffee growers.

Kabumbu is located in the foothills of extinct volcano, Mt Kenya. Owned/managed by Joseph Mugo Karaba and Pauline Mumbi Mugo who inherited the farm from Joseph's father, Kabumbu produced just 120kg of coffee this year. Rumble has exclusive access!

The area surrounding Kabumbu is characterised by its bright red, nutrient-rich volcanic soil and cool climate, both of which contribute to the outstanding quality of the coffees produced on this farm. When Joseph inherited this farm, tea was the main crop produced here. Instead, Joseph decided to try coffee - and he hasn’t looked back since.

Small-scale, independent farmers like Joseph who process coffees themselves are in a position to directly control quality across every aspect of their production - from harvesting and picking, through to processing and drying. The resulting coffee reflects the incredible degree of hard work and attention to managing variables that Joseph so carefully pours into his work. The cherries for this lot were carefully handpicked by Joseph and his team, then sorted to ensure only the ripest were processed. Joseph has a small washing station on the farm, allowing him to fully process the coffee before it’s taken to the mill.

The various rules around purchasing coffee in Kenya seem to change every few years. Currently, coffee must be purchased through the official auctions held in the capital, Nairobi. This means that lots are selected at cupping. Afterwhich, they’re sent to auction where someone must bid on the lot. In this case, someone on the ground has to be appointed to bid on our behalf so we can access the incredible coffee produced.

Joseph’s coffee showcases the benefits of farmer-owner operation at its best. We know you’re going to love this Rumble exclusive!
