Intense berry fruits complimented by sweet stone fruit and apple acidity.

This vibrant lot from Rwanda’s Northern Province bursts with intense berry notes, sweet stone fruit, and crisp apple acidity. Contributed by smallholder farmers, it was naturally processed at Ruli washing station, a key site of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative.

We paid 144% above the Fair Trade price for this coffee - learn why here.

Ruli washing station, located near the small town of Mususa in Rwanda’s rugged Northern Province, processes coffee grown by 320 smallholder farmers. Each farmer typically owns less than a quarter of a hectare, growing around 250–300 coffee trees alongside subsistence crops like maize and beans. The washing station uses a natural anaerobic process (sealed fermentation) to bring out the coffee’s beautifully distinct and complex flavours.

As one of three washing stations managed by Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, Ruli plays a vital role in centralising coffee processing and ensuring quality. Established in 2000, Dukunde Kawa enables smallholder farmers to combine their yields, making it viable for export. This cooperative also offers agronomy training, access to fertilisers and organic pesticides, and essential support to farming families.

Dukunde Kawa’s commitment to its members has helped transform coffee farming in the region, improving both production quality and livelihoods. By focusing on sustainable farming practices, the cooperative continues to empower farmers while producing exceptional coffees - just like this 100% Red Bourbon lot.
