Doña Luzmila is a dedicated, first-generation coffee farmer who has been producing coffee since 2008 with the support of her husband, Eider. Luzmila owns two farms in Gaitania, Tolima: the first, El Oasis, is 10 hectares at 1750 MASL and the second, El Recreo, is 4 hectares at 1600 MASL On her farms, she primarily grows traditional Colombian varieties, including Castillo, Caturra, Colombia, and Typica. In addition to coffee, she also cultivates beans and fruit trees, such as mandarin.
Raised in the hustle and bustle of the big city, Luzmila always dreamed of living on a farm, growing her own food, and caring for the land. After traveling and working in various parts of Colombia with her husband, they decided to settle in Tolima and join the local coffee-growing community.
El Oasis was the first farm Luzmila could afford, with the help of a loan from the bank. New to coffee farming, she relied heavily on the support of her neighbors to guide her in nurturing coffee trees and producing quality coffee. After four years of learning and overcoming challenges, Luzmila became proud of the coffee she was producing. She then transitioned to organic practices, and eight years after establishing El Oasis, she earned organic certification.
Luzmila shares that one of the greatest challenges she faces is finding labour to help harvest the ripe cherries, especially during harvest season. Fortunately, they live in a tight-knit community of coffee growers who support one another in harvesting cherries and transporting them to local associations.
