PRICING EXPLAINED

*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.

ABOUT

In the south of Huila province lies one of Colombia's best growing regions: Pitalito, home of Elsa Benavides’ farm. After working on other farms for many years, Elsa bought land in 2010 - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Adding to her many years of farming experience and huge amount of local knowledge, Elsa signed up with our export partner PECA’s learning and training program, leading to a vast and exciting improvement in the quality of Elsa’s product.

In 2018, she was able to sell some lots at specialty prices improving the outlook of the farm and allowing Elsa to make other improvements to her operation.

These have included updates to not only equipment and infrastructure but also improvements relating to environmental and employment matters, paying pickers a living wage and offering family members work also.

One of the approaches Elsa used with her coffee is natural processing, a beautiful technique which starts with good cherry picking. Then, the cherries are floated for filtering and hand-sorting. After this, the cherries are placed inside closed plastic containers for 60 hours without water. Then, they’re dried - first in the shade for four days, followed by drying in direct sunlight for up to 14 days until they reach perfection.
